Multi-Pet Discount in Pet Health Insurance: Who Offers a Discount for Multiple Pets?

With Dalma, you receive a 15% discount as soon as you insure more than one pet. The discount is automatically applied to the cheaper of the two plans – and applies permanently for as long as both pets are insured with Dalma. Here is how it works:

Step 3: The 15% discount is automatically applied to the cheaper plan. No code, no application.

Each pet receives its own contract with individual coverage. The discount applies regardless of whether you choose surgery insurance or health insurance, and whether you insure dogs, cats or both.

Example calculation: if your second pet would have a monthly premium of €30, you save €4.50 per month with the pack discount – that is €54 per year. With three pets, the discount is applied to the two cheaper plans.

Lassie offers a 10% multi-pet discount when you insure two or more pets with Lassie. The discount applies as a permanent price reduction on the premium.

In addition to the multi-pet discount, Lassie offers a bonus programme: users who complete health courses and quizzes in the app can earn points and premium discounts of up to €50 per year (dog) or €25 (cat). The bonus programme is independent of the multi-pet discount and can be used on top.

Barkibu offers a fixed €50 discount for each additional pet you insure. Here is how the discount works:

Via email: Barkibu sends you a discount code to enter when signing up the next pet.

Restriction: The discount code cannot be combined with other promotions.

Important: based on publicly available information, the €50 is a one-time sign-up discount – not a permanent premium reduction. The code is used when concluding the contract for the additional pet and reduces the premium in the first year. In subsequent years, the full premium applies. By comparison, the percentage discounts from Dalma (15%) and Lassie (10%) apply permanently – throughout the entire contract duration.

The three discount models work differently. What matters is not just the amount in the first year, but the total savings over the contract duration:

Bottom line: Barkibu’s €50 discount is more attractive in the first year at lower premiums (below approx. €28/month) than Dalma. From the second year onwards, however, both Dalma and Lassie overtake Barkibu’s fixed amount – because their discounts apply permanently to the premium.

In the German pet health insurance market, the multi-pet discount is still the exception. Most providers calculate each contract individually based on species, breed, age and plan. A discount for multiple pets is a deliberate concession to multi-pet owners.

For you as an owner of multiple pets, this means: if you are specifically looking for a multi-pet discount, you currently have the choice between Dalma (15%, permanent), Lassie (10%, permanent) and Barkibu (€50, one-time). With all other providers, you pay the full premium for each pet.

1) Permanent or one-time? This is the most important distinction. A permanent percentage discount (as with Dalma and Lassie) saves money over the entire contract duration. A one-time fixed amount (as with Barkibu) only reduces costs in the first year.

2) Percentage vs. fixed amount: A percentage discount grows with the premium – the more expensive the plan, the higher the savings. A fixed amount stays the same regardless of the premium level.

3) Automatic vs. manual: With Dalma and Lassie, the discount is applied automatically. With Barkibu, you need to request a code by email and enter it at the next sign-up.

4) Discount alone is not enough: A multi-pet discount is a nice bonus but should not be the sole criterion. Also consider reimbursement rate, waiting periods, annual maximum benefit and cancellation conditions.

5) Does the discount apply to all plans? With Dalma, the 15% discount applies regardless of whether you choose surgery insurance or health insurance. Check with other providers whether a discount only applies to specific plans.

In Germany, three providers currently offer an explicit multi-pet discount: Dalma (15% permanent), Lassie (10% permanent) and Barkibu (€50 one-time). With all other providers in this comparison – Petolo, Agila, HanseMerkur and Uelzener – there is no special discount for multi-pet owners.

Dalma positions itself with the highest percentage discount that is applied automatically, applies permanently and grows stronger with higher premiums. Lassie offers a slightly lower but equally permanent 10% discount. Barkibu offers a one-time fixed amount that can be attractive at lower premiums in the first year but falls behind the percentage models in the long run.

What this means for you: if you want to insure multiple pets long-term, it is worth looking closely at the duration of the discount – not just the amount in the first year.
