What a good dog liability insurance must cover
A dog liability insurance covers the costs when your dog causes damage to a third party: personal injury, property damage and financial loss. That is the core, because under Section 833 of the German Civil Code (BGB) you as the owner are liable without limit with your private assets, even without fault of your own.
A good policy covers these three types of damage with a high sum insured and includes the situations that really occur in everyday life. These include damage in a rented flat or holiday flat, damage while your dog is being looked after by friends, and damage that arises when your dog runs off the lead.
The most important figure here is the sum insured. The Verbraucherzentrale recommends at least 5 million euros, but in practice 10 to 15 million euros are the better choice, and there is a concrete reason for that. The most expensive case is personal injury. If, for example, a cyclist falls because of your dog and is left permanently unable to work, treatment costs, compensation for pain and suffering and lifelong loss of earnings quickly add up to a figure in the millions. A low level of cover of just a few million can then fall short, and you pay the rest from your own assets.
What is not covered, on the other hand, is your own loss: if your dog injures itself or you are bitten by your own dog, that is not a matter for liability insurance. Pet health insurance is responsible for that.
