Comparison table: Dalma vs. FIGO at a glance
What is already included in the standard tariff? Inclusion check
One of the biggest differences between Dalma and FIGO lies not in the main product, but in what you have to add on. Here you can see at a glance what is included in each provider's standard health cover and what costs extra as an add-on module.
Included with Dalma as standard (in the health cover tariff)
- Medically necessary operations incl. aftercare
- Medical treatments (outpatient and inpatient)
- Diagnostics (X-ray, MRI, lab, ultrasound and much more)
- Medication and dressing material
- Dental cover for FORL, gingivitis and periodontitis after a 12-month waiting period
- Preventive care budget of 70 euros or 100 euros per year from day 1 (in the health insurance tariff from an annual benefit limit of 1,500 euros; vaccinations, worming treatments, scaling, neutering)
- Worldwide international cover for the entire policy term
- FirstVet telemedicine, unlimited
- Reimbursement up to 4x the GOT rate incl. emergency service fees
- Behavioural therapy up to 5 hours per year (vet prescribed)
- Alternative healing methods unlimited (acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, osteopathy, laser and magnetic field therapy and others)
- Emergency boarding up to 250 euros per year if the owner is hospitalised for more than 3 nights
- Prosthetics contribution one-off up to 500 euros
Included with FIGO as standard (in the pet health insurance tariff)
- Medically necessary operations incl. aftercare
- Medical treatments (outpatient and inpatient)
- Diagnostics
- Medication
- Preventive care benefits (microchipping, vaccinations and others)
- FirstVet telemedicine, unlimited
- Reimbursement up to the maximum GOT rate (4x) including emergency service fee
- Lifelong insurance, no maximum entry age, no cancellation in the event of a claim
Paid add-on modules with FIGO
- Dental: Up to 500 euros per year for medically necessary dental treatments. Note: only available up to age 8 (dog/cat).
- Travel: For medically necessary costs abroad.
What this means: With Dalma, dental and international cover are part of the health cover, without you paying extra for them. With FIGO, these are separately bookable modules that increase the monthly premium. If you want to make a fair price comparison, add the "Dental" and "Travel" modules on top with FIGO.
Dalma and FIGO in direct comparison
Four areas in which the two digital providers differ clearly, and which you should keep in mind when choosing.
1. Reimbursement and maximum share
With Dalma, you choose 80% or 100% reimbursement. The value stays constant up to your animal's 9th year of life. From the 10th year of life, the so-called age adjustment applies in the health cover: the reimbursement rate falls by 5 percentage points per year from the original percentage. In the 12th year of life, Dalma therefore reimburses 90% of medical treatment costs under an originally 100% tariff. Accident benefits are not affected by this.
With FIGO, you choose 50%, 70% or 90% reimbursement. There is no 100% option. In return, the chosen reimbursement rate stays constant for life. With the top tariff (90%), you therefore always bear at least 10% of the treatment costs yourself, plus the deductible (if chosen) and anything above the annual benefit limit.
What this means: For younger animals, Dalma is ahead in the top reimbursement value (100% vs. 90%). From the 10th year of life, the age adjustment takes effect, and at a high age (from around year 13), FIGO tends to be ahead with a constant 90%. Anyone counting on maximum reimbursement in the majority of policy years has the advantage with Dalma.
2. Dental and international cover
With Dalma, medically necessary dental cover (FORL, gingivitis, periodontitis) is automatically included in the health cover after a 12-month waiting period. International cover applies worldwide for the entire policy term with no time limit.
With FIGO, both are add-on modules. The "Dental" module covers dental treatments up to 500 euros per year and, for dogs/cats, can only be taken out up to age 8, not later. The "Travel" module covers medical costs abroad.
Tip: If your animal could develop breed-typical dental problems (e.g. a Maine Coon with FORL, a Yorkie with periodontitis), check Dalma's included dental cover in detail. With FIGO, the cap of 500 euros per year may be too tight for a larger course of treatment.
3. Waiting periods and fast cover
With FIGO, a waiting period of 30 days applies for illnesses and operations, 48 hours for accidents. Within the first 30 days, microchipping, preventive care benefits and accident costs (after 48 hours) are covered. A separate, longer waiting period for breed-typical conditions such as HD, ED or FORL is not stated in the public terms.
With Dalma, the waiting periods are more granular:
- 2 days for accidents
- 14 days for surgical procedures
- 30 days for medical treatments
- 12 months for HD, ED, radius curvus, OCD, IPA, FPC, FORL, gingivitis, periodontitis
- 18 months for patellar luxation
- No waiting period for the preventive care budget
Our assessment: For plannable operations, Dalma is ready faster with 14 days than FIGO with 30 days. For breed-typical pre-existing conditions, the waiting periods with Dalma are considerably longer, which is standard for providers with a clear waiting-period structure and not unusual in the market.
4. Surgery insurance as a separate product
If you only want to cover the major surgery risk, both offer a surgery insurance. Here the difference is large.
- With FIGO: 80% reimbursement, capped at 2,000 euros per year. A cruciate ligament surgery (often 1,500 to 3,000 euros) can use up the annual cover on its own.
- With Dalma: Reimbursement rate of 80% or 100% depending on the tariff, annual benefit limit selectable up to unlimited. No flat cap at 2,000 euros.
What this means: Anyone looking for a pure surgery insurance should look closely at the cap with FIGO. For medium and larger procedures, the cover is tightly dimensioned.
5. Multi-pet households
With Dalma you get a 15% discount on the cheapest policy as soon as you insure the second animal. With FIGO there is a 5% discount only from the third insured animal. Anyone who wants to insure two dogs or a dog-cat combination benefits considerably earlier and more strongly with Dalma.
Who benefits most? Three owner profiles in a quick check
Instead of a pros and cons list, here are three concrete owner situations in which the decision shows up well.
Profile 1: You have a 12-year-old dog that has never been insured
Dalma cannot help here. A new policy with Dalma is only possible up to the day before the 9th birthday. FIGO also insures 10- or 12-year-old dogs. However: pre-existing conditions are excluded by FIGO via clauses, and the premiums for senior animals are considerably higher. It is nonetheless the only option in this profile.
Recommendation: FIGO. For senior animals without existing insurance cover, the absence of an age limit is the decisive factor.
Profile 2: You have a 3-year-old cat and a 5-year-old dog, both healthy
Both providers work here. Comparison:
- With Dalma: 100% reimbursement selectable, constant up to the 9th year of life, then an age adjustment for illness (5 percentage points per year from the original value). Dental cover and worldwide international cover included, 15% multi-pet discount from the 2nd animal.
- With FIGO: maximum reimbursement rate 90%, dental cover and travel only via paid add-on modules, 5% multi-pet discount only from the 3rd animal (so it does not apply here).
Recommendation: Dalma. The included benefits and the higher multi-pet discount are clearly at an advantage in this constellation.
Profile 3: You have a rabbit and a dog
Dalma cannot insure the rabbit. FIGO can insure both animals, but the 5% multi-pet discount only applies from the 3rd animal, so not here. Anyone who wants to insure a rabbit has only a few options in Germany, and FIGO is one of them.
Recommendation: Split. You could insure the dog with Dalma (included benefits, higher reimbursement rate, shorter surgery waiting period) and the rabbit with FIGO or another small-animal insurer. If unity of contracts matters more to you than detailed benefits, insuring both animals together with FIGO is a pragmatic solution.
Concrete claims: how Dalma and FIGO pay
To give you an idea of the real reimbursement amounts, here are three example calculations. All figures are based on the currently published tariff terms. The actual reimbursement in an individual case depends on waiting periods, contract status, pre-existing conditions and the exact invoice structure.
Scenario 1: Cruciate ligament surgery for a 4-year-old Labrador
Your Labrador tears its cruciate ligament during a jump. Surgery and aftercare: around 2,500 euros. Assumption: waiting periods have elapsed in both tariffs.
- With Dalma health insurance at the 100% tariff: 2,500 euros reimbursed (provided the annual benefit limit is not exceeded). At an 80% tariff: 2,000 euros reimbursed, 500 euros own share.
- With FIGO pet health insurance at the 90% tariff and a 0-euro deductible: 2,250 euros reimbursed, 250 euros own share. At a 70% tariff: 1,750 euros reimbursed, 750 euros own share.
- With FIGO surgery cost cover (separate): 80% of 2,000 euros (annual benefit limit) = 1,600 euros reimbursed, 900 euros own share. The cap applies in full here.
Scenario 2: FORL treatment for a 7-year-old Maine Coon
Your Maine Coon develops FORL. Treatment with extraction of several teeth: around 1,200 euros. Assumption: waiting periods have elapsed in both tariffs.
- With Dalma health insurance at the 100% tariff: 1,200 euros reimbursed. The 12-month waiting period for FORL has elapsed, FORL is included in the health cover.
- With FIGO pet health insurance at the 90% tariff without the "Dental" add-on: Dental treatments are not covered in the standard tariff. Reimbursement: 0 euros.
- With FIGO pet health insurance at the 90% tariff plus the "Dental" add-on: Up to 500 euros per year from the Dental module, so a maximum of 500 euros reimbursed. Own share: 700 euros.
Note: With FIGO, the "Dental" add-on can only be taken out up to age 8. Anyone who does not yet have a Dental module for a 7-year-old cat needs to act quickly.
Scenario 3: Outpatient treatment on holiday in Italy
You are in Italy with your dog in the summer. He develops an acute gastrointestinal infection, treatment at the Italian vet: around 400 euros.
- With Dalma health insurance at the 100% tariff: 400 euros reimbursed. The worldwide international cover applies for the entire policy term, included.
- With FIGO pet health insurance without the "Travel" add-on: Reimbursement abroad not covered. 0 euros.
- With FIGO pet health insurance plus the "Travel" add-on: Reimbursed within the terms of the Travel module, less the deductible.
What this means: Anyone who regularly travels abroad with their animal should check the international cover in the standard tariff. With Dalma it is included at no extra cost; with FIGO you have to add the "Travel" module.

Conclusion: Dalma or FIGO?
FIGO has two clear structural strengths in the German market: no age limit for new policies and the insurability of rabbits as well as parrots and parakeets. For owners of senior animals (from 9 years) or of rabbits and birds, FIGO is one of the few, or the only, sensible options. On top of that comes a very flexible tariff configuration with three adjustable factors (reimbursement rate 50/70/90%, annual benefit limit 3,000 euros/6,000 euros/unlimited, deductible).
Dalma scores with included benefits that, with FIGO, have to be booked separately as paid add-on modules: dental cover in the health cover, worldwide international cover, FirstVet telemedicine. On top of that come a selectable reimbursement rate of up to 100% (FIGO a maximum of 90%, but constant for life), a shorter waiting period for operations (14 vs. 30 days), a higher multi-pet discount (15% from animal 2 vs. 5% from animal 3) and the maximum GOT rate including emergency service. From the 10th year of life, the age adjustment applies with Dalma in the health cover (5 percentage points per year from the original value), while FIGO's reimbursement rate stays constant.
With the surgery insurance, the difference is clearest: FIGO's separate surgery cost cover caps the annual benefit at 2,000 euros, which is already tight for a cruciate ligament surgery. With Dalma, the surgery insurance is based on your chosen annual benefit limit, which goes up to unlimited.
The decision can therefore be summed up as follows: if your animal is older than 9 years or you want to insure rabbits or parrots, FIGO is the natural choice. For everyone else, Dalma is structurally stronger in the depth of its included benefits and in its fair multi-pet discount.

Frequently asked questions: Dalma vs. FIGO
Who is cheaper, Dalma or FIGO?
That depends heavily on the animal and the configuration. Dalma starts at around 15.99 euros for the dog health insurance and around 16 euros for the cat health insurance; the surgery insurance from 7.99 euros (dog) or 8 euros (cat). FIGO starts similarly, but can be cheaper for younger dogs and without add-on modules. As soon as you add the Dental and Travel modules with FIGO, the picture often shifts in Dalma's favour, because these benefits are already included in Dalma's health cover. Always compare like for like.
Who is behind FIGO?
FIGO is the trade name of AGILA Haustierversicherung AG (Hanover). Tiergarant Versicherungsdienst GmbH (Hanover) acts as the insurance intermediary. FIGO has had this name since summer 2023; previously the pet insurance products were offered under the name Petplan. Figo Pet has an international presence (Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France). Behind Dalma in Germany is the French insurer Seyna SA, distributed through a branch in Berlin.
Can I take out a new policy for my 10-year-old animal with Dalma?
No. With Dalma, a new policy is only possible up to the day before the 9th birthday. Policies once taken out, however, continue for life. FIGO has no age limit for new policies and also insures animals aged 10 or more. Note, though: pre-existing conditions are excluded by FIGO via clauses, and the premiums in old age are considerably higher.
Does Dalma also insure rabbits or parrots?
No. Dalma insures dogs and cats only. FIGO additionally insures rabbits, parrots and parakeets and is therefore one of the few providers in the German market that covers small animals and birds.
Which waiting periods apply?
With FIGO: 30 days for illnesses and operations, 48 hours for accidents. Preventive care benefits and microchipping are covered within the first 30 days. A separate waiting period for breed-typical conditions is not stated in the public terms. With Dalma: 2 days for accidents, 14 days for operations, 30 days for medical treatments, 12 months for breed-typical conditions (HD, ED, FORL, gingivitis and others), 18 months for patellar luxation. The preventive care budget with Dalma is usable from day 1.
Is dental cover included with both providers?
No. With Dalma, medically necessary dental cover (FORL, gingivitis, periodontitis) is automatically included in the health cover after a 12-month waiting period. With FIGO, you have to take out the paid "Dental" add-on, which covers dental treatments up to 500 euros per year and, for dogs/cats, can only be taken out up to age 8.
How is international cover regulated?
With Dalma, worldwide international cover applies for the entire policy term, with no time limit and no add-on module. With FIGO, international cover is only available via the "Travel" add-on.
What maximum reimbursement applies?
With Dalma, 100% reimbursement is possible. Up to the 9th year of life, the chosen reimbursement rate (80% or 100%) stays constant; from the 10th year of life it falls by 5 percentage points per year from the original value for illness (age adjustment). With FIGO, the maximum reimbursement is 90%, but the chosen value stays constant for life.
Does FIGO offer direct billing with the vet practice?
No, FIGO works like Dalma with receipt submission via the app. Anyone looking for direct billing with the practice is better served by TIERdirekt, which in the German market offers its own interface to practice management systems with a cash-free option.
What happens to the insurance in the event of a claim?
Both providers waive the right to terminate in the event of a claim. With Dalma, this protection applies from the 13th policy month; with FIGO, according to its own statement, from the start ("for a pet's whole life").
What rating does FIGO have?
FIGO achieves "Excellent" on Trustpilot and has the Focus Money seal 2025/2026. Dalma is at around 4.5 stars with more than 4,000 reviews on Trustpilot.
